The Time Is Nearing: Pumpkin Advice
October 15th, 2007With Halloween nearing, parents are feeling pressure to get prepared and kids are feeling the grueling anticipation of candy. Only 2 weeks away, many people are beginning to buy pumpkins already and carve them. Perhaps one of the funnest events of the Halloween season, if done too early, it can lead to sad looking Jack O’ Lanterns on Halloween night. Fortunately, there are many things that can be done to prevent this. No one likes to see a jacked up Jack O’ Lantern while trick or treating.
1) My personal favorite, you can buy the pumpkins now, and give the kids black markers to draw the patterns they like. A scary face, a ghost, etc. A few days before Halloween, you can cut out the patterns. That way the kids can have fun now and the pumpkins will still look good when the big night arrives. This is also great for kids that are too little to cut their own designs.
2) Buy the pumpkins now and carve them. Plan on having to buy more in about a week. Throw out the first ones and make new ones. This can actually be great for people that love carving pumpkins or really enjoy roasted pumpkin seeds. This way you can experience twice the fun.
3) Just stick it out and wait to buy the pumpkins!
Since the life span is slightly different for Jack O’ Lanterns depending on the region lived in, you will have to know how long a pumpkin can survive where you are. They usually tend to last a little longer in cooler dry climates. Also, a lit candle inside a pumpkin is pretty much a cancer stick. Hold off til Halloween! Obviously, any way you decide to do it is fine. There are other options. The only important thing here is to have respectable Jack O’ Lanterns on your doorstep on Halloween night.
As we have already mentioned, food is a key factor to any Halloween. Maybe it’s just for the kids, or maybe you are hosting a party this year. Either way, it’s important!
